Mini Vacation: San Juan, Puerto Rico
Although they say you shouldn't visit the same place twice when traveling, this was my third time to visit San Juan, Puerto Rico! I love this Island, it's beauty and the people here make it worth coming back to. This time was different though. The island was quiet, too quiet. It was evident that people are still nervous to come here, much like I was given the recent tragedies of Hurricane Maria. It's been 5 months and most of Puerto Rico is still in a state of crisis.
Lately I've had the urge to escape the New York cold, and with a little research it was clear that most of San Juan showed significant signs of normality. With that in mind, I booked an Airbnb and darted to the island to enjoy meals from local restaurants, beautiful beaches and to visit Old San Juan again. A lot of times when something tragic happens, we donate and keep it moving, however I wanted to take a moment to encourage you to continue to donate if you can. Sadly, a lot of the mainland residents still remain without power to this day. This is due to their antiquated electrical grid systems.
Coming here encourages others to come as well, I'm not saying I have a massive platform to make huge waves, but tourism assists in regaining funds that were lost. Locals are thrilled to have you come to the parts that are doing better. Putting your money into local businesses help the people of this gorgeous Island. Castillo San Felipe del Morro located in Old San Juan was designed to guard the entrance to the San Juan Bay, and defend the Spanish colonial port city of San Juan seaborne enemies. This gives us a glimpse of Puerto Rico's history and some of the best views in the city.
